This was an odd discovery in Copenhagen.
The Roman collections at the Ny Glyptoteket have been examined carefully for traces of paint. As a few of the exhibits show, the senatorial busts, the Amazons and the athletes we appreciate in elegant shades of gray were probably painted (painted like this!) when they were made.
How can a sculptural aesthetic so refined have developed alongside polychromy this garish and flat? Weird.
